“Pasteli” (Authentic Sesame snack): healthy and delicious

Pasteli is a traditional Greek sweet snack made of basically two ingredients, sesame and honey.

Sesame and honey are natural products of high nutritive value and they both had an important part in the diet of ancient Greeks.

There are two types of Pasteli: sweet (“melato”) and crispy (“tragano”), depending on the predominant ingredient (more honey = sweet, more sesame= crispy).

It is a sweet snack rich in vitamins, proteins and natural fibres.

Even though it contains many lipids, these are beneficial monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, like linoleic acid which improves the reaction of haemoblasts in blood, and linolenic acid, which brings down total cholesterol and improves the reaction of haemoblasts to ΑDP.

Also, sesame snack has no cholesterol or salt.
Consumption of pasteli by diabetic persons causes less hypoglycaemia than that caused by consumption of bread. This happens because it is richer in lipids and natural fibres, even though it has the same amount of carbohydrates as bread.

Another important fact is that pasteli, compared to other sweet snacks like chocolate, cookies, pastry etc., is rich in calcium, magnesium, iron and phosphorus. This explains why it is considered the healthiest snack and should be a part of everyone’s diet, children as well as adults.
